New Britain, CT – The Inauguration of Connecticut State University System Chancellor David G. Carter Sr. to take place Friday, October 20, 2006, at 11 a.m. Gov. M. Jodi Rell will lead a long list of dignitaries when the Connecticut State University System inaugurates Dr. David G. Carter Sr. as its new chancellor. The event will start at 10 am at the Welte Auditorium at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain.

David George Carter, Sr., became the fifth president of Eastern Connecticut State University on April 2, 1988—the first African American president of a four-year institution of higher education in Connecticut. Prior to his arrival at ECSU, Carter was a professor and a member of the graduate faculty in the department of educational administration at the University of Connecticut from 1977-1988. He also was a professor at the Pennsylvania State University from 1973-1977.

Carter earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education at Central State University in Ohio. He received a M.Ed. degree in curriculum and supervision at Miami (Ohio) University and a Ph.D. in educational development and educational administration from Ohio State University. Carter succeeds Dr. William J. Cibes Jr., who retired in February after serving as chancellor since 1994.

Carter and Cibes are board members of the IMPAC-Connecticut State University Young Writers Trust.
