With its mix of patriarchal greats and rising young stars and a broad spectrum of genres ranging from big band to bebop and beyond, the Litchfield Jazz Festival is the ideal symbol of the variety of styles and stylists featured this summer in jazz festivals in the region.

For example, legendary bassist/composer Charlie Haden, who turns 70 on Aug. 6, will lead his iconoclastic Liberation Orchestra, featuring the great Carla Bley, Aug. 5 at the Litchfield Festival, which this year will be Aug. 3 to 5 at the Goshen Fairgrounds.

Trombone virtuoso Slide Hampton, an NEA jazz master who celebrated his 75th birthday April 21, is Litchfield's opening act Aug. 3. In generational contrast, the festival presents the 20-year-old singing sensation Rachael Price, a semi-finalist at the Montreux Vocal Competition, on Aug. 4th.
