Every 2 years you have the right to vote for your town officials. You have the right to be heard and you should be heard. Get out of your chair and call your councilman. Ask about the corruption you see in this blog. Aak about taxes, schools, roads, or whatever is important to you. Share your opinions. Let him share his. If you are scared to share your name, don't. If you are more comfortable behind your keyboard, send an email. The exchange may surprise you. It surprised me.

Remember that the issues facing Enfield transcend the political parties. Neither has a lock on the right answers. Who has the better ideas? Make the call and ask.

"Ask", but don't ask too much, or too often. Did anyone read the minutes from last Enfield Council meeting. They're all posted at http://enfield-ct.gov/content/85/840/618/default.aspx

Looks that one Councilmen is annoyed over the number of emails. Check it out. While he may not "work" for Town, but it was his decision to run for office.
So if he doesn't like the number of emails, step down.

> As concerns response time from Town staff, Councilman Nelson pointed out he left his office for about five hours and when he returned he had 105 e-mails in that period. He noted he does not work for the Town and he doesn’t have 45,000 residents e-mailing him. He pointed out Town staff also has a job that has to be done, and if a Town employee goes on vacation, they will have lots of e-mail to deal with when they return. He noted urgent e-mails would be attended to first. He added citizens can also contact their Council representative.

Don't be too harsh on Councilmen Nelson. According to that minutes web site, he's the lone councilor voting against the sale of Asnuntuck for the ridiculously low price of $2 million. Whoever heard of selling 36 prime acres plus building, for $2 million? What a joke. Enfield taxpayers bear the brunt once again.

Asnuntuck Community College has like the 2nd lowest enrollment in the state's community college system. It could easily be closed in the near future and students sent to Manchester Then what will this building "house"?

Best part, Enfield will now have to lease back the athletic fields on these 36 acres from the State. Fields they've been using for years. Hello, hello, is there anyone in Enfield with a brain?

>> Councilman Nelson stated Enfield received $2,000 per year for the last 15 years for a 150,000 square foot building on about 30 acres of land. He feels this is an injustice to the taxpayers. He noted now they’re going to sell the building for $2 million dollars, and he doesn’t agree with that figure either. He went on to point out the Town just named a field for Mr. Petronella, and the Thompsonville Little League has worked very hard to raise funds to light that field. He noted there is now a chance they won’t be able to use that field. He stated he will vote no regarding the sale of that building.

>> Councilman Nelson stated the college is a great thing, however, 20 years from now it could be a minimum security prison. He noted there is nothing that states this will remain a college. He stated he would like to see something that states this has to stay a school. He added they don’t have an agreement on those fields as yet. He noted when there’s an agreement in hand, he might feel differently.

Enfield? Isn't that the same Town proposing a $1 million, 1 mile bike path by your town dump? Where do you people come up with such ludicrous expenditures. Would hate to have your tax bills. Lucky of us. we've allowed to vote on our town's budget.

Didn't that community college used to be located in the what's now the Enfield court house? In some Enfield industrial park?

So couldn't this community college be moved again? Doesn't sound like they have enough students to even warrant a building that large. And why would CT taxpayers wish to pay the heating and cooling cost on such.

Heck, if they did move these students to Manchester CC, they could likely eliminate some costly State positions too.
To save CT taxpayers.

That Enfield town minutes link is very informative. Nelson brought up another good point regarding that athletic field subcommittee. How the subcommittee didn't know what's going on, but the newspapers do. How can that be? Talk about miscommunication. Or make that, a serious lack of communication.

>>> Councilman Nelson stated the fields committee meeting went very well, however, some of the members seemed a little bit lost that the Council made a decision to do the additional sewer work without the committee’s knowledge. He noted Town staff took this upon themselves without even calling the Chair. He added the committee loves the idea this is being done, however, they were a little upset because the committee should at least know about this. Chairman Tallarita stated this strikes him as so out of place because that discussion has been going on for months. Councilman Nelson stated it was out there originally, but when it went out to bid, everything died out, and then all of sudden the Town decided to do this with outside money without discussing it with the committee. He noted the committee should know what’s going on before reading it in the newspaper.

Asnuntuck is actually located at a former Enfield Middle School dating back to when when the Town consolidated them in the 80's.

Further, Asnuntuck is the smallest of the Community Colleges in CT, thus the lower enrollment in raw numbers. That said, it is actually quite full..and they serve a much broader audience than Manchester as well.

Yes, its now in the old middle school (attended there), but prior to that, it was located in the industrial park next to Casual Corners. Another Enfield company that's closing its doors.

Last time I walked into Asnuntuck,
the halls were pretty empty. Their one "big" program is machine technology. Its been rumored before to be closing since Manchester CC and Capital CC are
within 1/2 hour of it, and handle a lot more than Asnuntuck can. Lots of Enfield residents have never walked thru doors. Many Enfield residents elect to take classes @ STCC (which is in MA).

So Asnuntuck ain't a booming community college. Their enrollment numbers speak to that.
No one would be too surprised if the State elected to close to save taxpayers $$$. The union staff and faculty would be placed elsewhere.

Property is certainly worth more than $2 million to Enfield taxpayers.

Again Enfield Town Council, what are you doing? As usual on top of everything that doesn't count!
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO WHAT'S BEST FOR THE CITIZENS OF THIS TOWN? You all should be thrown out of your positions because it's very obvious not one of you have the ????? to do your civic duty!

Am really confused over Enfield Council's recent sale of Asnuntuck vote since back in Feb'07 the Journal Inquirer reported "the governor rejected a proposal for $8.9 million next year to acquire and upgrade buildings at Asnuntuck Community College in Enfield. She did recommend $500,000 to help the college expand its manufacturing technology program."

Appears the Gov & State ain't planning to shower Asnuntuck with funds, and that its manuf tech program is its shining light. So why does the State need that large a building for less than 2000 students? Especially since its unlike there are ever 2000 students in that building at any one time? Enfield's alternative high school, Terra Nova, is no longer housed in there.

Look @ the ACC parking lot on any given day. Then look at MCC's lots. CT taxpayers should be asking more questions.
