After nine years, Wally Lamb, a two-time Oprah Book Club pick, says he's "in the home stretch" of his third novel, The Hour I First Believed, which may be published next fall.
After 25 years as a high school teacher, Lamb hit it big with She's Come Undone and I Know This Much Is True. The protagonist of the new novel grew up on a farm next to a women's prison that's intertwined with his family's history.
Not coincidentally, for the past eight years Lamb has led a writing workshop at a Connecticut women's prison, which "has both informed the novel and slowed down its progress," he says. "My students have been great teachers."
He has edited a new collection of essays by his students, I'll Fly Away: Further Testimonies From the Women of York Prison (HarperCollins, $25.95), out this week. Another collection, Couldn't Keep It to Myself, was published in 2003.
