Not everyone in the teachers' union is happy with how they handled Brislin's column.

I've heard nothing but negative comments about it from people.

The protests at the BOE meeting were embarrassing.

Anyone who saw that meeting on TV could tell you that it was big-time overkill.

When people ask me about the protests, I tell them that I don't like them. I try to explain that not all the teachers agree with how the union is handling things.

Mary Lombardo has a lot of explaining to do. She's blowing away all the good will that we've worked years to earn.

No, not at all. The responsibility for town staff management by Charter lies with the town manager. Any councilman meddling in that business is subject to removal.

Politics being what they are, I believe conversations do take place but they can't be in any official capacity nor can mandates be made to the manager. It would be an issue otherwise.

Come on people, we are asking for the wrong things. As taxpayers we need to demand more than just lower taxes. We need to demand a plan for fixing the issues we have in front of us, of which the tax rate is only one symptom.

How do we open more land for growth? Are we zoned right in the favorable places for growth? Is T-ville an asset or a liability? Can our schools produce a 21st century, and global, workforce? Do we have the right tax incentives in place that can be used consistently and effectively? Can our infrastructure support new growth if we could get new growth? Where do we need to invest first?

The Council is hanging their hat on a new train station. Is there a plan to develop the area around the train station to make it marketable for new business growth? No siree. That would take planning and an investment of money, neither of which will fly around here, no matter who sits in the majority.

Per today's JI article,

"The proposed fines are $100 for the first violation and $500 for a second violation committed within five years, according to Deputy Director of Public Works Geoffrey McAlmond.

During the hearing Tuesday, several residents said the fines were excessive. Thomas Walsh of Roseanne Street asked if he would be fined if another person were to put recyclable material in his tipper barrel.

"It is a lot a money," Town Manager Matthew W. Coppler acknowledged. However, he said, town officials would investigate a violation before fining a resident.
McAlmond added that the fines are meant for chronic violators and that residents have the option of disputing the fines before an appeals board."

So basically now the Town of Enfield will need to create a new DPW bureaucracy to handle "recyclable crimes and fines"?

Thought a benefit of the tipper barrel trucks, is that only person is needed to pick up trash, and they don't need to leave the trucks? Who then is poking through the trash to look for "trash offenses"?? Is there a "pre-trash pickup" screening?

This whole project just gets more and more bizarre, and costly.

Excuse me, but the Town Council is elected by the people, to represent the people. appears Charter needs revising if it doesn't speak to this. If Council "sees" something wrong, they have a moral obligation to do or say something.

This "see no evil, hear no evil,
speak no evil" philosophy is a major cop out. If Council isn't part of the solution, then they're part of the problem. Plain and simple.

"Is T-ville an asset or a liability?"

LIABILITY. While I enjoyed the bakery and grocery store in T-ville, I avoid it because the last couple of times I stopped there, I witnessed drug buys right in front of store. unreal that this kind of activity is taking place in broad daylight on the main road. so I stay away. especially when I have my kids in tow.

building a train station in such a depressed area is not the solution.

take a good look @ Freshwater Pond. did all that costly renovation make that area anymore appealing? no.

how is then that the former Town Manager was asked to resign by the former Mayor Tallarita lead Council? The Council has the authority to remove a Town Manager, but they don't have the authority to question scandel-like activities of the town employees under the Town Manager??

Never heard of such an organizational structure. Sounds like a crock to me.

why is it none of these "other" teachers have written "letter-to'editors" in support of Enfield BOE, and about their unhappiness with what a few complainers in union are doing?

one bad apple does spoil a whole bunch. so best toss out the bad apple, or be lumped in with them.

again, when the average Enfield teacher is making far more than the average Enfield resident, its little wonder tgat teachers aren't going to get much sympathy from the masses.

"The Council is hanging their hat on a new train station."

wrong move, buckos public transportation via trains isn't going to turn the Enfield economy around.

people who opt to use public trans, are already using the commuter buses and van pools. why would they switch to trains? why would they want to travel into T-ville to pick up trains? Parking in T-ville is already non-existent.
and who in their right mind would leave their vehicles unattended in a parking lot down there to take a train?

if I want to take the train, I go
to Windsor Locks. easy enough to get to, and its right out in the open. T-ville is not inviting. Face it, its hey days are over.

I, for one, would be satisfied w/lower taxes first, and see how that goes before asking for anything else. its highly unlikely we'll ever see lower taxes in Enfield. But I can dream, can't I?

You need to find a new bogeyman in Enfield. These posts are nothing more than tiresome and mundane, often barely coherent, griping. There's got to be some interesting dirt out there. Please find it.

    >>No, not at all.

whattya mean, "no, not at all"? the enfield town council can raise my taxes with their votes, but they can't speak up and take action if a town employee isn't holding up their end of the bargain? they can't look into scandels? that doesn't make any sense at all. talk about a wish=washy system.

who then is lookin' out for the residents? because I didn't have the opportunity to vote for the next town manager. only have the opportunity to vote for council.

Re-read the charter section: council can't interfere with hiring & firing of manager-appointed employees.

The Town Manager doesn't appoint himself— the council does, along with other officers: Town Clerk, Town Attorney. Job titles that begin with Town are council appointed. Those that don't have "Town" in the title are manager appointed.

Charter says that the Council can vote to investigate & report.

But technically they can't fire employees on the basis of the investigation. The manager has to do that.

"Charter says that the Council can vote to investigate & report."

so where were all the Council reports
on the so-call DPW scandels? isn't it ironic how those who have left town service (resigned, retired, etc.) are now "the scapegoats". kinda embarassin'.

a tad sensitive now, aren't we? there's more dirt in Enfield than there are brooms and shovels to clean it up. pick a topic: tipper barrels fiasco, BOE audit fiasco, rising property taxes, # of foreclosures, $ million bike path to town dump, a gated Scantic River access point, businesses closing left & right in town, water damaged high school, lighted ballfields.

and these are just the ones that have been brought to light on this blog. there's likely a dozen more left to uncover. Sherlock Holmes would have a field day!
