Certain Remarks Noted In T-Ville Discussion

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Evolution Of T-Ville A Hot Topic":

""Once those things happen, you will have the migration of gays and bohemians who recognize the undervalued real-estate in the neighborhood. With them will come quirky new businesses and a lively social scene.

Following the gays and bohemians will be the bourgeois who gentrify the neighborhood, in turn will attract chain retail to have a presence there."

We're already got the tattoo parlors, so I'd say the artists are already in T-Ville!!!!!!!!!!

And I'm not sure Enfield is up to having a lively nightlife aimed
at gays and bohemians? That would certainly require additional police presence downtown."

Could someone tell me how these remarks don't smack of the worst kind of ageism and homophobia?

Maybe you don't get this…

The idea is for the gays and bohemians to DISPLACE and REPLACE the criminals.

The cost of more visible police presence on Friday and Saturday night is fraction of what it costs to round up the drug dealers.

Editor's Note:

It's good to see all remarks noted, digested and discussed. In addition to the gay and bohemian comments, I also wondered how the residents cited in the posting below would "certainly stand out!"

A.T.

Bulldoze down the vacant buildings, the low income housing and crumbling mill houses, and
the people dealing drugs and carry guns on T-ville streets will leave cuz they won't be able to stay in Enfield (... its highly unlikely they could afford to live in a single family home in Southwood Acres or Whit Acres, or historic district. At the very least, they'd certainly stand out!)"

not sure where "AT" lives in Enfield, but IF two guys (or two gals, or guy & gal) were standing on my neighborhood's street corner, in the middle of the day, selling' drugs, they would most certainly "stand out". and their drug activity would not be tolerated.

sadly, perhaps that kind of behavior doesn't stand out in some other sections of the town?

Isn't "A.T.", blog owner, Andy T? Hasn't he ever been in T-ville in his travels?

Some of his friends have been to Enfield, and its likely they could tell the difference between downtown T-ville and other areas of Enfield. Some communities and their residents, do just "stand out".

Could it be that no one stands out in Andy's Litchfield? How sad.

Maybe you guys don't see what's being said "between the lines".

That statement implies that folks would stand out because they were blacks in the middle of a white neighborhood.

That is racism, plain and simple.

    ??????????????????
talk about a buzz kill. this was a great discussion until someone tried "to read between the lines", and turn it into something racial.
where the heck did that come from??

not one single post said anything about race, until the above post. so its very unfortunate that this poster is trying to turn the discussion into that. that's the trouble with internet - some try to so hard to "see" things that aren't there.

too bad to, cuz this T-ville discussion was one of the best I've seen on this blog (until this guy tried to turn it into something it wasn't)

so much for brainstormin' and opinion sharing.

and for the record, believe the earlier post referred to fact that if a drug deal was taking place on their street corner, it would "stand out". next time, get your facts straight.

Ya do know what they say about "assuming"? Seems ya "assumed" incorrectly on this matter.

What is "plain and simple" is that your statements were out of line and that you're trying to turn this into something about race.

this blog discussion was about a depressed area in Enfield that is crime ridden compared to others in the town. police records attest to this fact. its not a secret.

there are drug dealings taking place in broad daylight. now kids are pulling gun on another kid on a main street, in broad daylight.

this kind of criminal behavior would indeed "stand out" in most neighborhoods. and that's probably why it doesn't occur in some other neighborhoods.

before you "imply", get your facts straight about the focus of a blog discussion. geez.

It WAS a hot topic. A very interesting one. Too bad someone
    decided to disrupt the momentum
by trying to sidetrack with the "race card".

    Criminals are every color, race
and creed. And "unwanted" in most
neighborhoods. Crime is the # 1 problem w/T-ville. Too many turn a blind eye to what goes on in
T-ville. Even when the behavior "stands out".

See just how quickly a great subject thread can evaporate. Little wonder nothing gets done in Enfield. Ya got people who get too caught up in "splitting hairs". That's a shame.

I logged in this afternoon, excited to see how the T-ville discussion was transpiring. Was very disappointed to see the life was sucked out of this lively topic because someone got their knickers in a bunch.

The problems in T-ville have nothing to do with anyone's race. Its about a forgotten, depressed area, where drugs and crimes have taken over street corners.

For the record, Enfield (includes T-ville) is predominately a white community. So are Somers, Suffield, East Windsor, Granby, Tolland, & Ellington (and I would guess, Litchfield). Most northern CT communities are.

So are we, as residents of these communities, suppose to be ashamed or apologize for that?

Can we please, please, please just get back to the important topic of "what" to do with Enfield, downtown, Thompsonville?

I thought an earlier suggestion about constructing a combination court house and prison facility in that area, a pretty good one (of course if money is no object).

Think about it. Prisoners could be transported by train to and from
Enfield and other courts in CT. The state prisons are already overflowing and if folks want to keep criminals off the street, they have to be locked up somewhere. Enfield already has prisons, so what's one more?

Perhaps correction officers and other employees could receive some kind of housing "rebates" to purchase homes near this facility? Where there's a court house, there are usually attorney offices, bail bonds, etc. So some of the older homes could be renovated for these uses.

Asnuntuck Community College teaches courses in criminal justice, so perhaps they could make use of the
    facilities for training.

This would certainly give a "police presence" to the area and hopefully make people think twice about a life of crime.
