Teenage prose and poetry writers from throughout Connecticut are encouraged to submit entries of their work for this year's competition sponsored by the Connecticut Young Writers Trust and the Connecticut State University System.
The contest offers cash prizes ranging from $500 to $1,000. The deadline for applications is Feb. 1.
Students in public, private and home schools between the ages of 13 and 18 are eligible. Entry forms and submission instructions can be found at http://www.ct.edu/initiatives/ctyoungwriters
This year’s contest kicks off with a public event Jan. 15 at the Hartford Club, entitled “Young Writers Triple Knockout: Prose, Poetry and Pugilism.” A main event will be a poetry read-off between Gabrielle Calvocoressi and John Scully, called “Gaby vs. Iceman,” and will conclude at an evening reception featuring actual boxing matches.
When asked about the connection between boxing and literature, Trust Chairman Andy Thibault of Litchfield said the tradition came about after the light-heavyweight champion of the 1960s, Jose Torres, challenged novelist Norman Mailer: “You teach me how to write, and I teach you how to box.”
