First Niagara Delivers Development Grant;
More Funding Sought For Prizes

Young Writers Trust

The Connecticut Young Writers Trust is receiving a $2,500 program development grant from First Niagara Bank to provide writing enrichment programs for urban high school students.

On its website, ctyoungwriterstrust.org, electronic entry forms for its 15th annual competition are posted. The organization will emphasize enrichment workshops and author events this year.

Since 1998, the contest has attracted about 7,000 young poets and writers and awarded more than $200,000 in cash prizes, as well as trips to Dublin. Writers such as Patricia Smith, Luanne Rice, Kate Rushin, Wally Lamb, Marilyn Nelson, Jon Andersen, Bob Leuci, Lionel Bascom and Colin McEnroe have conducted workshops. A record 806 Connecticut students submitted poetry and prose entries last year.

The trust is seeking more funding, having lost $10,000 when founding donor Jim Irwin died in 2010 and an additional $10,000 when the Connecticut State University System ended its contribution last year.

Donations are fully tax-deductible and can be sent to Connecticut Young Writers Trust/ P.O. Box 8898/ New Haven, CT 06532. The trust is a 501 C (3) Public Charity. Its new website, http://www.ctyoungwriterstrust.org, includes a PayPal donation button and contact information.
