Free Speech Party Opening
Litchfield Inn
Sun., Oct. 14, 2007
WELCOME.
WELCOME TO POETS & WRITERS FOR AVERY,
A FREE SPEECH CELEBRATION.
MY NAME IS ANDY THIBAULT,
AND I STAND WITH YOU TODAY
FOR LIBERTY,
AS CO-SECRETARY OF POETS & WRITERS FOR AVERY.
IN ANY SOCIETY,
THERE IS A CONSTANT STRUGGLE BETWEEN
LIBERTY AND AUTHORITY.
THE DECISION TO STAND UP FOR LIBERTY
BECOMES A LITTLE EASIER
WHEN THAT AUTHORITY IS ILLEGITIMATE.
WHAT WE HAVE HERE
IS A CASE IN WHICH
ILLEGITIMATE AUTHORITY CROSSED THE LINE
AND REACHED BEYOND THE SCHOOLHOUSE GATE
TO ARBITRARILY PUNISH A STUDENT
WHO EXERCISED HER FREE SPEECH RIGHTS.
WHAT WAS AVERY DONINGER TO DO?
SAY THANK YOU!!!
FOR VIOLATING MY CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS!!!
ANOTHER STUDENT MIGHT HAVE SAID SOMETHING LIKE THAT. OR JUST KEPT QUIET.
SILENCED.
WELL, THANK GOD WE HAVE AVERY DONINGER ON OUR SIDE!!!
THE SIDE OF LIBERTY AND JUSTICE.
WE HAVE A GREAT KID HERE.
A YOUNG, STRONG WOMAN WITH A BACKBONE
WHO WORKS LATE AT NIGHT AS A SANDWICH ARTIST
AT SUBWAY
AFTER ROWING FOR CREW
PLAYING IN THE BAND
BABYSITTING
AND DOING HER SCHOOL WORK.
IT'S AN HONOR TO STAND UP WITH AVERY DONINGER
FOR THE BILL OF RIGHTS!!!
I CAN FEEL THE SPIRIT OF LIBERTY IN THIS ROOM.
The spirit of liberty
is STRONGER THAN any action
OF THE GOVERNMENT CLASS THAT SERVES ITSELF
AND
NOT
THE PEOPLE.
THE SPIRIT OF LIBERTY IS STRONGER
THAN ANY CORRUPT PRINCIPAL
OR CORRUPT SUPERINTENDENT
WHO SUPPRESS AND LIE ABOUT WRITE-IN VOTES!
WHO TAMPER WITH DISCIPLINARY RECORDS
AND
STUFF GUIDANCE FILES
IN RETRIBUTION
AGAINST A COURAGEOUS YOUNG STUDENT
WHO DARED TO SEEK REDRESS OF A GRIEVANCE.
Avery Doninger and others dared to seek
Redress of a grievance
WHEN THE STUDENT COUNCIL SPONSORED
BATTLE OF THE BANDS KNOWN AS JAMFEST
WAS POSTPONED AGAIN, AGAIN, AGAIN & AGAIN
AND THEN CANCELLED
WHEN TAXAPYERS AND CITIZENS TOLD THE SUPERINTENDENT, PAULA SCHWARTZ,
GIVE THE KIDS A BREAK.
WHO'S THE ADULT HERE?
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
I SUBMIT TO YOU,
THE ADULT HERE IS AVERY DONINGER.
THE CORRUPT SCHOOL BOSSES COULD
LEARN A LOT FROM AVERY DONINGER
IF ONLY THEY HAD INTEGRITY
COMMON SENSE
AND HONOR.
WELL, THE GOVERNMENT CLASS SERVES ITSELF.
IT'S UP TO US TO MOVE THE GOVERNMENT CLASS
TO ACCEPT JUSTICE
AS WE STAND UP TODAY FOR LIBERTY
AND SUPPORT AVERY'S FREE SPEECH LITIGATION.
IN THAT SPIRIT OF LIBERTY AND JUSTICE,
I PRESENT TO YOU
AVERY DONINGER.

So the principal objects to being referred to as a rubberized, fluid-filled bag … I guess that means that terms like dirigible, water balloon, and used condom are off-limits too.
The principal is right, of course; she's not a douchebag. She sounds more like a bloviating, self-important bureaucratic twit. This "respect-me-or-I’ll-kill-you" approach to school management is the last kind of leadership schools need in the 21st century. "The beatings will continue 'til morale improves" is funny; the principal's actions in this matter are decidedly not funny.
Nowhere do we learn exactly what the conduct was to which the principal objected so strenuously. Are students not allowed to feel disdain for administrators? Are they not allowed to express that disdain in writing, even if that expression is in juvenile terms? And was that conduct, whatever it was, so egregious as to warrant official sanctions?
We have made a federal case, literally, out of a private expression of adolescent exasperation. The administrators should have gotten their comeuppance in Federal court but Judge Kravitz, a Bush-43 appointee, did not provide it. Nice going, Your Honor: all that stuff the kids learn about the First Amendment really is only history, isn't it? It's not real; it's not now. Thanks for the free civics lesson.
Still, I think the lasting victory will belong to Avery. She won the class election and can honestly list "Voted class secretary, 2007" on her college applications. And the administrators in Region 10 will forevermore be known as "Principal Douchebag" and "Superintendent Schmuck."
Savor your victory, ladies: you earned it.
Concerning Freedom, Role Modeling and Teach Your Children Well
Indeed, cherishing/respecting constructive values and morals is what eventually nurture freedom as a whole, therefore constructive freedom of speech as well.
Constructiveness emphasized.
There are certain ancient traditions of knowledge, which are reluctant and often will not allow transmission and the acquirement of their teachings, simply for the fear that the recipient(s) may not be sufficiently well equipped to absorb constructively.
See…knowledge is neutral and so is freedom of speech. It is up (or down) to each and every one of “Us (the People”) to determine, whether to utilize our grand privilege – freedom – constructively or destructively
Respectfully,
Boaz ItsHaky
