The Cocoa Puffs volcano no longer spews mounds of chocolate or much of anything else.
Cocoa Puffs, aka former Enfield Mayor Patrick Tallarita, suffered a crushing blow Wednesday night as local Democrats eliminated him and his wife Jeannette from the town committee, party sources said.
Lists of the vote totals provided by town committee members show Cocoa Puffs received a measly 31 votes compared with nearly 60 votes received by some members of a challenge slate. Jeannette Tallarita received 32 votes. A Tallarita daughter was ruled ineligible, town committee members said.
"It was a message for him [Cocoa Puffs] just like the election," a town committee member said. "We'll take it from here and try to do the right thing. I think this should bring the Democratic Party together for the right reasons."
Last fall's elections removed Democrats from majorities on the town council and board of education as a number of Cocoa Puffs' allies were defeated. Cocoa Puffs himself did not run for re-election, saying he yearned for higher office. Allies had lobbied on his behalf for the position of town committee chairman, but now he's not even on the town committee.
Cocoa Puffs earned his moniker after a Memorial Day 2007 grocery store tirade against fellow Democrat Jack Mancuso, a witness against Tallarita in corruption investigations.
Among the top vote-getters in Enfield's District Two Wednesday, according to tally sheets provided by town committee members: Red Edgar, 58, Albert Harrison, 57, Laurie Longhi, 56, Karen Camidge, 56, Mary McGuire, 56, John McGuire 54 and former Mayor Adam Pierz, 38. Pierz and Michael Blaney, 39 votes, were among those on the successful challenge slate.
Barely making it on the town committee were Sister Cocoa Puffs, aka State Rep. Kathy Tallarita, 36 votes; and Jeannette Tallarita's business partner Dave Fredrick, aka Dave Frederick, 35 votes.
