A professor of writing and a young award-winning poet will be the keynote speakers when the 11th IMPAC-CSU System Young Writers Dinner is held June 1 at the Litchfield Inn, Route 202, Litchfield.
Lionel Bascom, who teaches at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury , and Maya Polan, who won the 2007 IMPAC-CSU poetry competition, will speak at the event, which honors the regional and statewide winners of the contest. The grand prize winners will be announced at the annual dinner. They will be awarded a trip to Dublin for events at the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and Dublin Writers Festival in June
About 5,000 students have entered the program since its founding in 1998. IMPAC, which sponsors it with the Connecticut State University system, is an international work-productivity firm.
Besides having taught for more than 20 years at Western, Bascom is a journalist and the author of "The Last Leaf — The Hidden Legacy of Dorothy West" and "A Renaissance in Harlem: Lost Stories of an American Community."
Polan is a student at the University of Redlands in California, where she is studying poetry.
Master of ceremonies for the event will be author Rand Richards Cooper. The Jen Allen Big Band and a reggae-ska band, The Positive Downside, will entertain.
Seating is limited. The cost to attend is $35. For reservations or information, call 800-814-6931 or visit www.ctyoungwriters.org.
