    Felicity Sheehy, 16, of the Westover School of Middlebury, accepts $1,000 check and other items Sunday [May 31, 2009] at the Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford as she is proclaimed State Poetry Champion in the 2009 Connecticut Young Writers competition. With Sheehy, L-R: Franz Douskey, poet and board member of the Young Writers Trust; Dr. Louise Feroe, Vice Chancellor, Connecticut State University System; and Co-Masters of Ceremonies Ravi Shankar, the poet and Central Connecticut State University Professor and Rand Richard Cooper, board member, author and travel writer for Bon Appetit. Sheehy, one of eight county champions, won for her poem, "Evening Conversation."

  • ABOUT THE 2009 STATE POETRY CHAMPION

    Felicity Sheehy, a senior at Westover School, is from Jefferson Valley, NY, the daughter of Patricia Sheehy and Walter Orzel.

    In May 2009 Felicity Sheehy was awarded the top statewide prize in poetry in the 12th annual IMPAC-Connecticut State University System Young Writers Contest for her poem, "Evening Conversation." Earlier she had been named the IMPAC poetry winner in New Haven County.

    In Spring 2009 Felicity won 3 other major awards for her poetry. She won a regional Gold Key Award in the Scholastic Writing Awards.

    She won first place in the 2009 Patricia Grodd Poetry Contest, a national poetry contest sponsored by The Kenyon Review. As part of her first place win, she attended the intensive Kenyon College Young Writers Workshop this summer on a full scholarship.

    A poem written by Felicity was among 11 finalists in the 2009 Broken Bridge Poetry Contest in which the winning poem was written by another Westover student.

    In 2008, Felicity was also named the IMPAC New Haven County poetry winner.

    Felicity Sheehy '10 of was named as semi-finalist in the 2009 National Merit Award Program and a 2009 AP Scholar with Distinction for her achievements on Advanced Placement exams.

    At Westover School, she serves as Co-Editor in Chief for poetry of the 2010 Lantern, and served as poetry editor of the 2008 &2009 issues of the Lantern, the school's annual literary and art magazine.

    In September 2009 she was awarded the Westover Scholastic Award, which goes to the returning student who has the highest academic average for the preceding year.

    In the Winter 2009 trimester at Westover, Felicity honed her poetry writing skills in Mr. Coffin's Craft of Poetry class, in which students create a poetry portfolio. In her freshman year was awarded 2nd place in the Lynn DeCaro Poetry Contest, a competition sponsored by the CT Poetry Society for high school students.

    Felicity has been writing poetry since the age of 5.
