Obama Adviser Samantha Power At Columbia University Monday

TOPIC:
Obama, Human Rights, and the Lessons of the New Diplomacy

  • Complete Announcement By Columbia University

  • Her book about the United States turning a blind eye to genocide in the 20th century won a Pulitzer Prize. Now, Samantha Power, an adviser to President Obama, is being credited and / or blamed for U.S. intervention in Libya.

The New York Times columnist Maureen Dowd opined that fierce women in the Administration outmuscled the male military establishment, persuading a skeptical President to bomb the forces of Col. Moammar Gadhafi in what now seems to be a civil war. Others, like The Daily Beast’s Tara McKelvey, assert it is sexist and silly to make a big deal of Power and her colleagues – Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and UN Ambassador Susan Rice – uniting in opposition to Defense Secretary Robert Gates, National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon and John Brennan, the counterterrorism chief.

Margaret Carlson, formerly of Time and now a columnist for Bloomberg news, put it this way: “This rendering of events is greatly exaggerated but useful for critics coming at Obama from all sides, from those adamantly opposed to intervention to those who now support his actions but don’t like how he got there ...

“The conflict in Libya, as challenging as it may be, has a better chance of ending well than the gender wars. We’re still mired in stereotypes of the roles men and women play, especially in military affairs, despite years of evidence showing that women are as analytic, decisive, aggressive and determined.”

Sen. Gayle Slossberg, D-Milford, the co-chairwoman of the committee, said it is already clear that Malloy's proposal would not provide sufficient autonomy to the watchdogs.

The default rule should be this, when in doubt; give it out.

    By MATTHEW REED

Editor's Note: The writer is an attorney and chief of police for South Windsor, CT. Chief Reed recently spoke at the RC Newsroom Cafe in Torrington, CT about his experiences obtaining and releasing public records.

Time after time I hear of municipal officials working to squash the rights of our citizens when asked for access to a public document. The frustration mounts year after year.

On March 15, 2011, I read about the nearby town of Vernon and its contemplation of forming a Freedom of Information advisory committee. I think it prudent that a municipality educate its employees regarding the release of documents under our state’s freedom of information act. Such an advisory board is authorized by statute and encouraged by the state’s Freedom of Information Commission.

Kudos to the town of Vernon for contemplating the formation of this committee. I hope the committee is truly used to educate employees about the proper and timely release of information and not used as a hurdle for citizens to jump before receiving a public record.

Connecticut’s statute requires citizens be granted “prompt” access to public records. Let’s face it: The freedom of information act is quite simple.

The act states that the records contained within a public agency are public records and every person shall have the right to inspect or receive a copy of them. The act describes certain records that may be withheld in limited circumstances. However, the act is not intended to serve as a shield to disclosure. The official denying the request has to justify the withholding of the record for some bona fide reason. The point behind the freedom of information act is to ensure that public officials do not withhold public records from the rightful inspection of our citizens.

Too often you read or hear of a story in which a public official withholds public information out of fear of some consequence political or otherwise. Or you hear that the official has forwarded the request to the town attorney for an opinion. As a result, municipalities pay through the teeth for a town attorney to render an opinion that is usually not necessary. The default rule should be this, when in doubt; give it out.

I recall an incident several years ago when I called the finance department of a neighboring town to find out the salary of the police chief. The employee who answered the phone hesitated, told me that a certain supervisor was not in and she didn’t think she was authorized to give out the information. Even after I told her I was a police official from a nearby town she still would not give me the information. I was flabbergasted. This is just a lack of education.

Municipal leaders need to do a better job at adopting the attitude that the information contained within the files of a public agency are just that; public.

Political language, George Orwell said, is designed to make lies sound more truthful and murder respectable.

And so we hear from Ben Barnes —the architect of Connecticut’s new budget – who states quite blandly that consolidation of the Freedom of Information Commission with four other agencies would increase transparency in state government. Keep in mind Barnes said this under oath before the Government Administration and Elections Committee.

Announcement: EFFORT TO BUILD WEST HAVEN FISHER HOUSE FOR DISABLED VETERANS

    CT Lags Behind Nation
    In Providing Housing
    For Families Of Injured
    Who Are Hospitalized

"I can't think of a better way to show our support than by helping injured or ill veterans and their families through this wonderful project."-- Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman

The Friends of Fisher House in Connecticut has been joined by Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman in its effort to build Connecticut's first Fisher House -- a $6 million project -- on the grounds of the Veteran's Administration Medical Center in West Haven.

A press conference to formally acknowledge Lt. Gov. Wyman's support will be conducted Thursday, March 17, 2011 in the West Haven VA's Donaldson Education Center, Room A, located on the 2nd floor of Building 2, starting at 11 am.

The Fisher House project is a unique private-public partnership that builds and then donates "comfort homes," on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers. These homes enable family members to be close to a loved one during treatment for combat wounds or unexpected illness, disease, or injury.

Once discharged from active duty, a veteran may also live in a Fisher House while receiving outpatient treatment. There is at least one Fisher House at every major active duty military and VA medical center in America, except in Connecticut. However, patient density has now increased to such a point that Connecticut needs one as soon as possible.

Connecticut's Fisher House volunteers envision a facility that will provide free lodging for up to 20 families, and is expected to cost $6 million. The Friends of Fisher House in Connecticut must raise $3 million, which will be matched by national corporate sponsors. When completed the Fisher House will be donated to the VA.

"The brave men and women veterans who have sacrificed so much for our country deserve not only our gratitude and support when they are serving, but when they return home," Wyman said. "I can't think of a better way to show our support than by helping injured or ill veterans and their families through this wonderful project."

Joining Lt. Gov. Wyman on the leadership council are: Attorney Kevin E. Creed, US Army (Ret) & Chairman of the Friends of Fisher House, Connecticut; Retired Appellant Court Judge Anne Dranginis; Retired United States Congressman Jim Maloney; Executive Senior VP of Studio & Event Production for ESPN Norby Williamson; Dr. Hilary Onyiuke, UCONN Medical Center; CPA John Bauer, Accounting Firm of Mahoney, Sabol & Company; Dr. Nicholas Blondin, Yale University; Darlene Clouther, Litchfield; Dr. Jeffrey Steckler, Orthopedic Surgeon, New Britain; Nicholas Creed, Litchfield; Sarah Lasher, Litchfield; Raelene D. Miller, Stratford; Gary Thomas, Knights of Columbus; and Tom Flowers, Milford. Many others support effort and the council is joined by the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Knights of Columbus, the Masons, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Connecticut Chapter of the Purple Heart.

The Friends of Fisher House Connecticut is registered with the IRS and the Secretary of State as a 501.c (3) non-profit organization. President Barack Obama donated the proceeds of his children's book and $250,000 of his Nobel Peace Prize to this cause.
