“It was much better than in previous years, and we had a record number of entries,” said prose judge and professional writer Rand Cooper. “In previous years we’d have a few really terrific ones, then as you go further down it would get a little dodgy. But of the 60 or so finalists I read, the bulk of it was quality writing.”
