Essex 2nd Grader Asks Novelist,
'What inspires you as a writer'
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Chloe Zito, an aspiring writer of “spooky stories,” came away inspired after an extended question and answer session last week with novelist Wally Lamb.
Zito, 8, a second grader at Essex Elementary School, met Lamb during an event at The Hartford Club hosted by the CT Young Writers Trust. She asked Lamb, after a reading, “What inspires you as a writer?”
In short, Lamb said, he forces himself to sit and write. Whatever flows from his brain down his arms to his hands, he writes.
“I liked his answer,” Zito said. “I wouldn’t even think to ever try that … well, I’ll probably try it someday.”
Zito told her teacher, Kelly O’Connell, about the session with Lamb. “She said, ‘Wow, you’re so lucky.’"
The best part, Zito recalled, was Lamb asking about what she liked to read and write. “I told him I like to write spooky stories. I like to read and write for fun.”
