Can you really start boxing at age three?

Mike Mike Machine Gun Oliver did, legs dangling from the little stool inside the ring. He trained with the legendary Johnny Duke and Iceman John Scully -- the former light heavyweight contender -- at gyms including the San Juan Center in Hartford.

Mike Mike spent his kindergarten years on the street until late at night, fending for himself. He suffered a hammer blow to the head and had to guard his food at one point living in an apartment with 30 people. Duke and Scully taught him to avoid confrontations and walk away from fights outside the ring.

Duke, who died in 2006 at age 81, spent about 60 years training Hartford boxers, mostly at the former Bellevue Square Boys Club. He guided Oliver to a New England Golden Gloves championship at 112 pounds in 1998.

Oliver currently fights at 120 - 122 pounds, in the super bantamweight / junior featherweight divisions. He is the reigning New England and Eastern Boxing Association Junior Featherweight Champion, with a professional record of 22 twins, seven by knockout, and two losses. He trains with Scully and Sammy Vega, a former seven-time national amateur champion, at the Lions Den in Middletown.
