Public Service Announcement: CT Young Writers Trust Accepting Donations Via Pay Pal

Final Judging Under Way For 2011 Competition
Awards Presentation June 11
At Central Connecticut State University

The Connecticut Young Writers Competition is a collaboration of the Connecticut Young Writers Trust and the Connecticut State University System, with the support of the Family Trust of Glastonbury business consultant Matt Daly and many businesses and individuals throughout the state.

The Connecticut Young Writers Trust was created in1998 and has since affirmed the work of more nearly 7,000 young poets and writers.  By June 11 of this year, The Trust will have awarded more than $200,000 in prizes while conducting numerous workshops for teachers and their students.

Thirty finalists have been selected from a record number of entries in the 14th year of the Connecticut Young Writers Competition. The finalists will vie for the chance to be published in Connecticut Review, the literary journal of the Connecticut State University System, as well as monetary awards from the Connecticut Young Writers Trust.

The state finalists are from Lyme/Old Lyme, New Haven, Griswold, Rockville/Vernon, Danbury, Torrington, Fairfield, Greenwich, Beacon Falls, Windsor, Brookfield, Mystic, New Milford, Willimantic, Middlebury, Stamford and Hartford.

The statewide winners will be announced on June 11 at a special awards ceremony at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). There were 806 entries received, surpassing last year’s previous high of 795. It’s the first time that a record number of entries were received in back-to-back years.

The Trust was primed to shut down in December 2010 before Daly emerged as a rescue donor.

"This year's entries were nothing short of miraculous, especially given the shaky status of The Trust in December and our ultimate resurgence," said Ravi Shankar, the poet, professor and chairman-elect of the board that governs the non-profit foundation. "This is the strongest batch of entries in many years. There were so many deserving works of exceptional quality that the judges were forced into deep and protracted debates."

Shankar and outgoing Chairman Andy Thibault urged those who value the development and affirmation of young writers to support the work of The Trust.

The Connecticut Young Writers Trust is a federally approved 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible. In addition to sending donations to the Young Writers main office, donors also may contribute through PayPal by going to the following link:
