Boxing column wins honorable mention

The struggle of Javier Flores is inspiring and instructive. As his trainer, Iceman John Scully, put it: “I never say a guy’s gonna become a world champion because I know what the world is like; but, Javier could be … he is a huge competitor.”

Cool Justice was tickled to learn that a column about Flores was cited by the Society of Professional Journalists last week. Outside the ring, Flores has a gentle charisma and a compelling focus. Best wishes to Javier, Iceman and manager Jose Colon.

  • The highlight for many colleagues of Cool Justice at the SPJ event was an award won by a team including the late Ann DeMatteo. DeMatteo went the distance with cancer, going out as a champion. Like many SPJ veterans, DeMatteo was always a welcoming presence, exuding a vibe that gave comfort to others. That surely was part of what made her a great reporter, columnist and editor.
