[Scully's] riveting stories were perfect examples of the point that Paul Doyle made in the morning -- the best writers have such intimate knowledge about their subject that they effortlessly bring it to life.

    By DR. RHONA FREE
    Academic Vice President
    Eastern CT State University /
    Friend Of Young Writers

Editor's Note: Rhona Free, economics prof in a former life, was named United States Professor of the Year in 2004 by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement in Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. She is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College. In photo above, she presents an Eastern t-shirt to Dean Pinkert, a U.S. International Trade Commissioner.

Paul Doyle, sportswriter for the Hartford Courant, is one good sport.

Doyle agreed to run a workshop for English and writing teachers, students and business people at Andy Thibault’s surprising boxing-writing-musical event for the Connecticut Young Writers’ Competition on January 15.

The event program quoted Paul: “We'll talk about how the imagery and emotions of the games -- the games we watch and play and debate -- provide such an ideal vehicle to teach writing to kids.” But instead of teachers, 7th and 8th grade football players from the Jumoke Academy dominated the imposing conference table Paul sat at in one of the fancy meeting rooms at the Hartford Club. I’m sure Paul intended to spend most of the session talking about how teachers can encourage youngsters to use imagery to bring writing to life. About 10 minutes in, though, he asked a question of his audience and the response was not the usual silence in which one reluctant but sympathetic soul offers up a polite response. No, every one of those football players had something to say. They were polite but practically jumping off their seats to be the next to talk. Their eagerness proved that Andy was right when he decided that the way to get more young males interested in writing (and in the Young Writers Competition) was to focus on sports writing. And good for Paul -- he went off-script and instead of running a workshop for teachers he spent a quick hour nurturing and inspiring some very enthusiastic young writers.

All of the Jumoke Academy students played football but had also worked on the school newspaper. They talked as writers about the challenges of deadlines and capturing in words the feel of an exciting competition, and as athletes about how writers sometimes brilliantly but other times poorly reflect the emotions of players and coaches. They told stories about playing and with equal excitement talked about writing about playing. I wasn’t the only older person at the workshop -- there were several teachers or retired teachers -- but we all did the same thing, we watched, intrigued by the interaction between a well-known sportswriter and some well-spoken and talented 14 years olds.

Eastern is one of the universities that support the Connecticut Young Writers competition which is why Andy invited me to attend his combination fund-raiser, p.r. event, and educational forum. The morning workshops (Paul Doyle’s was only one of a few) were the educational part.

When the workshops were over, lunch was on. Although the Hartford Club has been around for a long time (established 1873, in the current building since 1904), I doubt that lunch there has ever been served at tables surrounding a full-size boxing ring. It wasn’t until I saw the podium set up inside the ring that I understood what Andy’s plan was for the rest of the day. All afternoon some of Connecticut’s best writers would read their work from the podium, then in the evening -- live boxing matches / sparring.

Not only was a boxing ring new to the Hartford Club, the cocktail hour music of “guitar phenom” Desiree Bassett was probably a bit out of the ordinary, too. She is an inspiration to any young writer wondering if art can be a way of life. She was fabulous, playing Jimi Hendrix for an audience of teachers and club members balancing wine glasses and hors d’oeuvres while standing in a ring around the ring, peering through the ropes to get a clear view.

When Desiree packed up her guitar, Gaby Calvocoressi set the stage for the rest of the evening by reading some of her boxing poems; poems that make you cringe but keep you listening.

  • Gaby Poems

  • Then, John Scully, ex-fighter, current trainer and aspiring writer shared some of his new work from “The Iceman Diaries.” His riveting stories were perfect examples of the point that Paul Doyle made in the morning -- the best writers have such intimate knowledge about their subject that they effortlessly bring it to life.

After reading for about 15 minutes, Scully shifted gears and put on his trainer’s hat. Ringside his style was the same as at the podium -- quiet, focused, and intent. The short boxing matches were gentlemanly and good-natured. It’s too bad that the Jumoke Academy students weren’t there for the evening -- they would have liked the music, the readings, and the boxing. They would have had added inspiration from Calvocoressi and Scully to continue writing and maybe to submit something for the Young Writers Competition. They would also have had a chance to thank Andy Thibault for organizing this fabulous, quirky event.

    It was a knockout.

    PUBLIC
    SERVICE
    ANNOUNCEMENT

Connecticut Young Writers DEADLINE FEB. 1

The Connecticut Young Writers Competition for high school students is designed to encourage young writers and poets in Connecticut. Now in its 13th year, the competition provides young poets and writers in each of Connecticut's eight counties an opportunity to win cash prizes, and proceed to represent their county in a statewide competition.

Teenage writers of prose and poetry from across Connecticut, ages 13-18, are being encouraged to submit original entries to an annual literary competition which awards winning entrants with cash prizes and an opportunity to have their work published in the literary journal of the Connecticut State University System, CT Review.

During this academic year, two young writers from each of Connecticut's eight counties will win cash awards for either prose or poetry writing. Entries must be nominated by a teacher in a public or private school, and postmarked on or before February 1, 2010. Home school entries are also accepted. (In 2009, there were more than 580 entries.)

Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven, and Western Connecticut State University in Danbury will receive the initial entries and host county award ceremonies in April 2010. Entries are sent directly to one of the universities, depending upon the county in which the student lives (see list on entry form).

From the select group of county winners, a distinguished panel of judges will select the state's top poet and writer at a dinner and awards ceremony held in late May or early June 2010. The two winners will each have an opportunity to be published in CT Review. Winners are also interviewed by local media, and have their work highlighted on the website of the Connecticut State University System.

    By Derek Bonnett

Unbeaten featherweight Matt Remillard returns to the Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Connecticut, USA this Friday, January 29 to defend his NABF title against Rafael Lora. Remillard, 20-0 (11), stopped Lora in four rounds in September of last year to capture the title, but the ending was marred by some minor controversy as Lora turned away from his opponent and was twice struck in the back of the head after the referee waved them on.

This time, Team Remillard is hoping for a less controversial finish. However, Remillard’s trainer, Paul Cichon, expects a much more formidable Lora to show up.

  • Press Release

World class professional boxing hits the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut on Saturday, January 29th as TKO Boxing Promotions presents two world title bouts featuring longtime New England fan favorites, Peter “THE PRIDE OF PROVIDENCE” Manfredo Jr. and Matt “THE SHARP SHOOTER” Remillard.

Tickets priced at $80.00, $50.00 and $35.00 are now on sale at the Mohegan Sun Casino Box Office and through Ticketmaster (ticketmaster.com, phone 1-800-745-3000). Doors on the evening of the event will open at 6:30pm with the first bell at 7:30pm.
(Ticket prices include a $5.00 facility fee.)

Said Chet Koerner, President of TKO Boxing Promotions “We’re thrilled to bring a world class professional boxing card to one of the premier gaming destinations in the country and we truly look forward to working with the Mohegan Sun team in making this an outstanding evening.”

Headlining the January 29th event, Peter Manfredo Jr. will face off against Matt “THE PREDATOR” Vanda in the ten round main event for the NABF Title.

The 29 year old Manfredo, 33-6-0 (18KO’s), is coming off a brutal first round stoppage of veteran Ronald Weaver on November 5th in Cockeysville, Maryland. Earlier in 2009, Manfredo stopped Walid Smichet with a devastating knockout in the seventh round on April 18th at the Montreal Casino in Quebec, Canada .

In addition to his second place finish in the premier season of NBC’s The Contender, Manfredo has faced world class competition throughout his career, with many of his biggest wins coming in the New England area.

Since 2005, Manfredo has defeated Scott Pemberton, Joey Spina, Ted Muller, David Banks, Shane Benfield and Donny McCrary in bouts which have taken place near his hometown of Providence.

A native of St. Paul , Minnesota , the 31 year old Vanda brings a record of 42-9-0 with 22 knockouts into the battle with Manfredo. Known as “THE PREDATOR”, Vanda’s first big win of his career came on June 24, 2005, when he won a twelve round decision over former world champion Yory Boy Campas at the Target Center in Minneapolis .

In 2008, Vanda battled Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. twice, losing a hotly disputed split decision in Sonora , Mexico on July 12th and losing a hard fought decision in Las Vegas on November 1st.

Vanda has won three in a row in 2009 against veterans Tocker Pudwill, Ted Muller and Phil Williams, all in bouts which have taken place in Minnesota .

The co-feature on January 29th is a featherweight showdown between Hartford ’s Matt “THE SHARP SHOOTER” Remillard and Dominican Rafael Lora in a ten round battle for the NABF Title. The bout is a rematch of their action packed September 19th bout in South Windsor, CT , won by Remillard in a controversial fourth round stoppage, which Lora hotly disputed.

The 23 year old Remillard, amongst the most promising prospects in boxing, has amassed an undefeated record of 20-0-0 (11KO’s), since turning professional in 2005. He went 4-0 in 2009, most recently winning a unanimous decision over veteran Marty Robbins in Knoxville, Tennessee on December 19th.

Now based in Irvington, New Jersey, Lora, 11-1-0 (5KO’s), was undefeated prior to the first bout with Remillard and is focused on revenge after the first bout.

The undercard is headlined by sensational lightweight prospect Francisco “THE PHENOM” Contreras. A native of the Dominican Republic, 25 year old Contreras burst onto the boxing scene in this country with a sensational first round knockout of Gustavo Mejia on June 18th in Baltimore, MD. He finished with four big wins in 2009, the last a dominating unanimous decision over veteran Marteze Logan on December 19th in Knoxville, Tennessee .

In a special attraction bout, hard hitting fan favorite, Adelita Irizarry makes her return to the Mohegan Sun Casino in a six round welterweight bout. A native of Hartford, Irizarry, 6-3-0 (2KO’s), won a four round unanimous decision over Yvonne Reis on August 29, 2008 in her last bout at the Mohegan Sun Casino.

Also making his return to the ring is popular junior lightweight newcomer Joseph “CHIP” Perez. The 23 year old Perez won his pro debut on September 19th with a terrific four round unanimous decision over Juan Zuniga in South Windsor. In his most recent bout Perez, 2-0-0 (1KO), stopped Lewis Crews on December 19th in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Rounding out the card will be undefeated Russian lightweight prospect Adam Sargysan, 13-0-0 (8KO’s), Canadian junior lightweight Arash Usmanee, 4-0-0 (2KO’s) and the pro debut of outstanding amateur prospect, junior welterweight Michael Finney of Smith Station, Alabama.

    Obama
    Opposes
    Pants on the Ground

    By ANDY BOROWITZ

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) - In his first State of the Union Address Wednesday night, President Barack Obama will attempt to reach out to middle class voters by stating his opposition to pants on the ground.

In an advance copy of the President's speech obtained by The Borowitz Report, Mr. Obama uses the phrase "pants on the ground" no fewer than sixteen times.

"My fellow Americans, let's be clear: if you wear your pants on the ground, and your hat to the side, you run the risk of looking like a fool," Mr. Obama says.

"Let us all work together, as Americans, to lift those pants off the ground," the President continues in one of the speech's rhetorical flourishes.

In a similar vein, at one point the President indicates that he will veto any healthcare bill that pays for "gold in your mouth."

Mr. Obama's opposition to pants on the ground is seen by many as an attempt to reach out to Republicans, for whom droopy trousers have been a winning issue.

But so far, early GOP reaction to the President's speech has been muted, if comments by House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) are any indication.

"Quite frankly, we were opposed to pants on the ground until he was," Rep. Boehner said. "Now we're for them."

I did not have a "tizzy fit", I merely asked why the girls were being denied the right to sing the song (via email no less- hard to have a "tizzy fit" via email).

The girls were not "banned" from singing the song- they were "encouraged to choose a different song- one that did not have the word "Jesus in it".

This song represents a woman who lets her faith get her through a difficult time. There are so many of our students (and adults) that use drugs, alcohol, and other self-destructive measures to cope with problems, maybe a little faith would cut down on the funerals for kids that OD. In closing, this is really a big deal for nothing. There was NO DRAMA and no "tizzy fits", but I am glad that you all have the right to speak."

Casualties In Region 10: First Political Speech, Then Religious Freedom

Jennifer has left a new comment on your post "Parent Post In Jesus Song Flap; Underwood Fans Ups...":

(Sigh) I remember reporting on the Doninger issue when I worked for the Advocate and my story specifically raised the question of religious freedom:if the school claims it can violate a student's first amendment rights to freedom of speech, would the first amendment right to freedom of religion be next? Apparently so.

Ingest In Lieu Of Critical Thinking, Free Expression

... any time any word is considered for use that may, just may, cause someone to stop and think, all students in the school system, all teachers, staff members, administrators and residents should stop immediately and replace that word with VANILLA ...

Ron Winter has left a new comment on your post "Parent Post In Jesus Song Flap; Underwood Fans Ups...":

Between the Jamfest flap and the current Coffee House imbroglio it is obvious that nothing in District 10 is allowed if it is even slightly to one side or another of a poorly defined center.

Thus I nominate the word VANILLA as the official District 10 slogan, and a container of VANILLA flavoring should be the school logo and mascot.

Further, any time any word is considered for use that may, just may, cause someone to stop and think, all students in the school system, all teachers, staff members, administrators and residents should stop immediately and replace that word with VANILLA.

As in "VANILLA Take The Wheel" or "Central Office Administrators Are VANILLAs!"

    That will show them!

    PARENT SPEAKS OUT:

My daughter was accepted into the "coffee house" talent show after performing "Jesus take the Wheel". Apparently, her singing was fine, but her use of the word "Jesus" was not. Why are we teaching [our] kids the Bill of Rights? I am concerned that Region 10 has really started to fail our children not only academically..., but morally as well.

I am concerned that Region 10 has really started to fail our children not only academically..., but morally as well. The song is not meant to convert anyone, but it is a song of hope. The song is about a young woman who turns to Jesus for help versus drugs or anything else. Perhaps if our kids had more positive places to turn to in times of need, regardless of who they worship, Region 10 would not be burying so many of [its] teenagers from drug overdoses ...

    TROUBLING
    LYRICS

    Jesus, Take the Wheel

    (James/Lindsey/Sampson)

She was driving last Friday on her way to Cincinnati
On a snow white Christmas Eve
Going home to see her Mama and her Daddy with the baby in the backseat
Fifty miles to go and she was running low on faith and gasoline
It'd been a long hard year
She had a lot on her mind and she didn't pay attention
she was going way too fast
Before she knew it she was spinning on a thin black sheet of glass
She saw both their lives flash before her eyes
She didn't even have time to cry
    She was sooo scared
She threw her hands up in the air

    Jesus take the wheel
    Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
    I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
    Jesus take the wheel

It was still getting colder when she made it to the shoulder
And the car came to a stop
She cried when she saw that baby in the backseat sleeping like a rock
And for the first time in a long time
She bowed her head to pray
She said I'm sorry for the way
    I've been living my life
I know I've got to change
    So from now on tonight

    Jesus take the wheel
    Take it from my hands
Cause I can't do this on my own
    I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on

    Ooh, Jesus take the wheel
    Ooh, I'm letting go
So give me one more chance
Save me from this road I'm on
    From this road I'm on
    Jesus take the wheel
Ooh, take it, take it from me
Ooh ooh wah ah ooh ooh ooh

Finding the next generation of writers

I helped judge last year’s contest with 580 entrants. Some of the writing just blew me away ...

    By JAMES H. SMITH
    Executive Editor
    Bristol Press /New Britain Herald

Our reporters and photographers and some editors met the other day to talk about reporting, writing and photojournalism. I call them idea meetings and they are meant to turn ideas into stories, stories we think we should write because you, our readers, would want to read them.

This time we talked about how to and how not to write them, turning to the masters — E.B. White and William Zinsser. White: “cut the deadwood,” and quoting his teacher, Will Strunk: “omit needless words.” The best writing is lean writing.

White wrote “Charlotte’s Web,” and spent a career at the New Yorker writing columns about anything that came to mind, or “suited his fancy.”

Zinsser started his career at the old New York Herald Tribune, a “writer’s paper,” compared to say, The New York Times, with it much more stringent and structured style.

“There’s a kind of writing that might be called journalese,” wrote Zinsser in his seminal book “On Writing Well,” which has sold more than a million copies, “It’s the death of freshness in anyone’s style. It is . . . a mixture of cheap words, made-up words and cliches . . . You must fight these phrases or you will sound like every hack . . . (and) you will never make your mark as a writer.”

It is good for writers and editors to consider such matters and try to make our daily offerings the best they can be. Let me say that I know some days are better than others, yet we try hard seven days a week to bring you clear, compelling writing that informs and maybe even uplifts.

We used to do it, in my lifetime anyway, with manual typewriters — what a wonderful sound a newsroom full of writers made pounding away on manuals. Now with our keyboards and computers, it is almost the sound of silence, but we are still putting one word after another trying to make sense in print.

Which brings us to the next generation of writers, bloggers, tweeters and who knows what? I really can’t imagine E.B. White tweeting nor caring to.

And so I’m glad to hear of two demanding high school writing competitions looking for entrants right now.

Teenage writers from throughout Connecticut, aged 13-18, are encouraged to send their prose or poetry to the Connecticut Young Writers Competition sponsored by the Connecticut State University system. I helped judge last year’s contest with 580 entrants. Some of the writing just blew me away and coming up with the winner was one hard chore. Locally, Central Connecticut State University hosts the first round of entries and comes up with a county winner in prose and poetry. There are cash prizes and the possibility of being published in CT Review, the Connecticut State University literary journal. The eight county winners compete for the state prize. Poems and stories and essays are due Feb. 1. Get detailed information at Ct.edu/initiatives/ctyoungwriters.

The Connecticut Foundation for Open Government has announced its annual high school essay contest with a $1,000 first prize, $500 second, $300 third, and $50 honorable mentions.

It asks students to write on three subjects, including this: “Newspapers, television and radio stations are legally responsible for what appears in their publications or broadcasts. Should the law permit people who have been libeled, slandered, ‘cyber bullied’ or whose privacy has been invaded to sue the owners or operators of social networks such as Facebook, My Space and Twitter for such offensive statements by indivdual account holders?”

High school teachers in the state have been alerted to the contest and its April 15 deadline. The foundation can be reached at fcpww2@sbcglobal.net

How good it is to see young people being encouraged to pursue thoughtful writing.

MURDERER'S ROW - Gaby "She Be Stinging" Calvocoressi, Kate "La Terrible" Rushin and Binnie "The Demon Barber" Klein take a breather after reading from their works in a boxing ring Jan. 15 at The Hartford Club. Also among the presenters during the CT Young Writers Triple Knockout Event -- Poetry, Prose And Pugilism -- was a former State Poetry Champion, Amy Ma, who now teaches for the Hartford Public Schools. Young poets and writers can enter their works by Feb. 1 for the 2010 competition. [See entry form link below.] The CT Young Writers Trust has given more than $182,000 to young poets and writers since 1998. Cash prizes will be awarded during celebrations in April at the four Connecticut State University System campuses and at the annual dinner which will be scheduled in late May or early June. The festivities on Jan. 15 -- including writing workshops, two bands and a boxing exhibition -- drew about 150 guests to the Hartford Club.

In an historic first for The Hartford Club, an actual boxing ring was set up next to chandeliers and Revival Georgian windows of the second-floor ballroom.

Brawling In The Ballroom -- Mark Twain would certainly have approved.

The Triple KO Event on Jan. 15 featured an Undercard of Poets & Writers and a boxing exhibition coordinated by Iceman John Scully, Sammy Vega and Mike Mike Machine Gun Oliver.

The performers served to highlight the Feb. 1 deadline to enter the CT Young Writers Trust 13th annual competition.

  • Scully also squared up against Gaby "She Be Stinging" Calvocoressi in two bouts of words.

A natural stage presence and Connecticut native, Calvocoressi brought the house down with her "Prayer in the Name of Saint Thomas Hearns," with its hobbling heavy bag doing penance. Iceman, in his debut as a public reader, came on strong with his anecdotes about traveling around the world because of boxing. He told of bringing busloads of youngsters to places they didn't dream they would see. These excerpts are from his work in progress, "The Iceman Diaries."

Middle school students from the Jumoke Academy were rapt about the undercard whose headliners included:

    * Bob "The Breeze" Leuci, riffing on the spot about the solidarity of writers;

    * Binnie "The Demon Barber" Klein warming up with her personal trainer by throwing (hard) jabs in the air;

    * Chandra "Bonecrusher" Prasad divining the space of Amelia Earhart in her cockpit;

    * Jumoke Academy teacher "Merciless" Amy Ma reclaiming her own inner Dopey from the trauma of a childhood Snow White play.

Jeffrey "No Dice" Dressler, featured in the upcoming Universal Pictures film "Ring Announcer," wowed the crowd with his pipes, bringing the rumble to the ballroom by introducing the writers as fighters. Throughout the event, fellow Masters of Ceremonies Rand "Blood" Cooper and "Irish" Ravi Shankar kept it together with flair.

The evening culminated with actual fights, with Mike Mike Machine Gun Oliver squaring off against a much larger Pito Cardona and going two animated rounds, and then Cardona bulling his way around with the sharp Chip Perez, just two weeks off his upcoming appearance on the undercard of Friday Night Fights at Mohegan Sun on Jan. 29th.

Machine Gun lived up to his name with flurries, Perez looked polished and agile, while Cardona -- the biggest man in the ring -- looked like he was messing around but could impose his will at any moment.

The Iceman narrated the exercises he puts fighters through and the crowd -- made up of everyone from school teachers to policemen, con men to lawyers (and those straddling the fine line between them) and students of writing to members of the Hartford Club, enjoyed every minute. Bravo to The Hartford Club and all the many sponsors for making this event a reality!

  • From Publishers Weekly
Muscular and musical, this second collection from Calvocoressi (The Last Time I Saw Amelia Earhart) combines boxing, Elvis, church burnings, sex and horses to produce a book that is pure Americana. Exploring the parameters of masculinity, Calvocoressi plays with the gender of the narrative voice from poem to poem, Have you/ ever gotten hit or thrown against a wall?/ There's a sweetness to it, at that moment when/ your God would forgive you anything. The result is a not unpleasant ambiguity. Unafraid of interacting poetically with severe subject matter, in Fence she describes the murder of Matthew Shepard in the voice of a disgusted everyman. They took that boy and tied him to a fence/ and beat him till he didn't know his mother's/ name. Boxing is the overlying theme of the collection; in Fugue Calvocoressi turns Rilke's Archaic Torso toward Duk-Koo Kim, the South Korean lightweight who died after a fight with Ray Boom Boom Mancini: For here there is no television/ that does not see you. Calvocoressi's poetic intensity makes energetic identity politics into verse: Take my hand,/ take my whole life too. I've slicked/ my hair back, I've made myself/ a boy for you. This is a compelling sophomore effort from a very promising poet.
