El Bardo The Legend's Thought For The Day

    Leo Connellan, 1928-2001

-- 'The Life of the Poet,' Connecticut Magazine, 1995

"I went to work but I wrote every day. Sometimes I didn't know what I was doing, but I just did it. I was like a ballplayer who bats a ball in a vacant lot and everybody wonders what he's doing. They wonder.

"They wonder if he's crazy. One day they let him play in the game. He's been hitting that ball so long that when the guy throws it, he knocks it over the fence and everybody says, 'How did you do that?'

"Because he got his swing, he got his motion, he knew what he was doing. And he practiced. That's the kind of life I've lived, I wrote poems from 1947 to 1974 before I got my first book."

    Delaware Masturbators March Against O’Donnell

“If you’re against masturbation, why would you want to serve in Congress?”

    Largest Pro-Wanking
    Demonstration
    In History

    By ANDY BOROWITZ

  • The Borowitz Report

  • WILMINGTON (The Borowitz Report) – Galvanized by Republican senatorial nominee Christine O’Donnell’s anti-masturbation stance, masturbators from across the state converged on Wilmington today in what some are calling the largest pro-wanking protest in American history.

Carrying signs reading, “O’Donnell: Hands Off Our Masturbation,” the angry masturbators clogged downtown Wilmington, stopping traffic for blocks.

Harley Farger, a leading Delaware masturbator and planner of the Million Masturbators March, said it was difficult to organize masturbators “because they’re used to acting alone.”

Mr. Farger, the executive director of the pro-monkey-spanking group MasturNation, said that the “wank and file” of his organization believe that masturbation is an inalienable right guaranteed by the Constitution.

“Our country was founded by rugged individualists,” he said. “And you know what individualists like to do.”

He said that Ms. O’Donnell’s anti-whacking position was “ill-timed,” adding, “In this economy, masturbation is one of the few simple pleasures people still can afford.”

Tracy Klugian, a homemaker and masturbator from Dover, Delaware, said she is “puzzled” by what she sees as the contradictory nature of candidate O’Donnell’s position: “If you’re against masturbation, why would you want to serve in Congress?”

A spokesman for the Wilmington Police Department, Crandall Darlington, said that the Million Masturbators March could cost the city tens of thousands of dollars, “especially when you include the cost of cleaning up afterwards.”

Meehan: Respected Public Defender Takes Thrashing For Doing His Job

    By Atty. Richard Meehan
    Due Process Column

I read the early reports from the Hayes murder trial as the evidence began. Summoning immense personal strength, Dr. Petit took the stand and described the early horror that he and his family endured. It was the type of testimony that incites the passions of a jury. Any reasonable person listening to that would be filled with a mix of feelings, from revulsion for the perpetrators to sympathy and compassion for what this man and his family endured.

Public Defender, Thomas Ullman, wisely decided to ask no questions. When I taught trial practice at Quinnipiac Law School the first tenet of cross examination I passed on to my students was to only ask questions if there was something to gain. Like any competent trial attorney the best examination of this victim was none at all.

I have known Tom Ullman for many years. He is a dedicated and skilled trial attorney. Had he chosen to go into private practice he would have earned significantly more that what the state pays. He believes in the importance of providing even the most seemingly guilty person with a vigorous defense.

Green Party candidate wants debates in 1st District

    By Kym Soper
  • Journal Inquirer

  • Published: Tuesday, September 14, 2010 12:16 PM EDT

Green Party candidate Ken Krayeske has called for nine debates with Democratic incumbent and political heavyweight U.S. Rep. John B. Larson of East Hartford.

A political activist and blogger, Krayeske faces not only Larson but also Republican challenger Ann M. Brickley and Socialist Party candidate Chris Hutchinson.

He proposes dates, times, and locations, for the nine debates spanning one month and starting Sept. 29.

But even though the first date is only two weeks away, little organizational legwork has been done.

Krayeske admits that while he has reached out to Brickley, he has yet to contact Larson's campaign, or even the venues and moderators he has suggested. Seven of the nine venues he pitched are community colleges or high schools with the intent of getting students involved in the race, he said.

"I plan to do it soon," Krayeske said of preparation that would need to be done. "I plan to take the bull by the horns."

Socialist candidate Chris Hutchinson is "all for it," Krayeske added.

Larson spokesperson Maripat Finigan says the six-term congressman "traditionally has debates with all candidates, and I don't imagine that changing any time soon.

"We're working with a number of organizations that have done debates in the past, and we're looking forward to having a date" before November, Finigan said.

Like Krayeske, Brickley also is hoping for multiple debates at sites spread throughout the district. But so far, only one venue in Bristol has shown interest, campaign spokesman Chris Senecal said.

"The 1st District traditionally isn't considered a barn-burner, but this year could be different," Senecal said.

As for Krayeske's debate proposal, Senecal said the Brickley campaign was notified only through a press release.

Krayeske, who graduated from the University of Connecticut law school this spring, was arrested during the 2007 inaugural parade for Gov. M. Jodi Rell when he stepped out into the street to snap a photo of Rell. The charges were later dropped, and Krayeske has a pending civil rights lawsuit against the police.

He also attained national headlines in 2009 butting heads during a press conference with UConn men's basketball coach Jim Calhoun over his $1.6 million salary.

  • CCDLA: A Call For Poll Of The Executive Committee

  • The Connecticut Criminal Defense Lawyers Association

  • Criminal Law Today said...

Jealousy runs rampant in this business and that is unfortunate. Right now the talk of the Connecticut Criminal Defense Bar is what is going on in the City of Waterbury. This issue is a lightning rod situation. When Norman Pattis tries to raise a valid issue relevant to all members of the criminal bar regarding the position of the CCDLA he is accused of trying to undermine the organization. What reason Norman Pattis has to undermine the CCDLA and what he stands to gain from doing that is likely one of the questions of the ages.

There is a great deal of talk regarding what is going on in the City of Waterbury and the investigation of its Chief Prosecutor and a lawyer who has won more trials than most members of the bar combined.

This like many other things has been the subject of much gossip. Now this is a matter of public concern so discussion would seem to be appropriate. Many people want to advance their own agenda when it comes to this topic, these people want to ignore one major question that being “How did this investigation start”? The smart money is that a group of lawyers thought that it was a way to somehow increase their own “share” of the business by removing a prominent member of the bar, and this is well known.

Here is the bottom line as far as this is concerned. To those involved, you need to take a brief moment and make note of the fact you are not slick and you did not pull a [coup]. Just because your name does not appear on a letter does not mean that your involvement is not well known or you are fooling people into believing that you are not a part of this.

You should be prepared for the day when your questioned about conduct involving grievance panel investigations into the use of “runners”, multiple bar presentments taking place in the same month and a great deal of other activity that you believe nobody knows about. You were not “slick” in taking the actions that you did in this case nor were you” slick” the numerous other times you have tried similar stunts designed to humiliate lawyers by speaking ill of them behind their backs the basis being you are jealous of them and the success they have achieved in the area of trying cases. You are not “slick” when you attempt to steal business from practice areas you had no idea could be fruitful until you saw the fruits of their labor.

Maybe you should tell one of your partners in crime about the comments you make about him having to borrow money from his mom to pay his quarterly taxes. This is a complicated business but one thing about criminal law is fairly simple and straight forward. Those in need of a criminal defense attorney want a good one. They want a lawyer who has tried and won cases, and at a minimum brings their practice book to a jury trial. They want a lawyer who will work hard on their behalf and they want a lawyer knowledgeable on the law. If you do not possess these qualities then you will not be taking over any “market share” you believe you should have. The long list of people who you advised to plead guilty in cases where they did nothing wrong so as to not ruffle any feathers and who later realized this and voiced their displeasure to anyone who will listen is going to keep your share of the business where it exists today. You should take note of this before you pat yourself on the back behind clothes doors and give yourself so much credit for being so clever. One thing is clear and will not change pushing for a federal investigation will never make up for a lack of ability on your part.
