Public Service Announcement: CT Young Writers Trust Accepting Donations Via Pay Pal

Final Judging Under Way For 2011 Competition
    Awards Presentation June 11
    At Central Connecticut State University

The Connecticut Young Writers Competition is a collaboration of the Connecticut Young Writers Trust and the Connecticut State University System, with the support of the Family Trust of Glastonbury business consultant Matt Daly and many businesses and individuals throughout the state.

The Connecticut Young Writers Trust was created in1998 and has since affirmed the work of more nearly 7,000 young poets and writers.  By June 11 of this year, The Trust will have awarded more than $200,000 in prizes while conducting numerous workshops for teachers and their students.

Thirty finalists have been selected from a record number of entries in the 14th year of the Connecticut Young Writers Competition. The finalists will vie for the chance to be published in Connecticut Review, the literary journal of the Connecticut State University System, as well as monetary awards from the Connecticut Young Writers Trust.

The state finalists are from Lyme/Old Lyme, New Haven, Griswold, Rockville/Vernon, Danbury, Torrington, Fairfield, Greenwich, Beacon Falls, Windsor, Brookfield, Mystic, New Milford, Willimantic, Middlebury, Stamford and Hartford.

The statewide winners will be announced on June 11 at a special awards ceremony at Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). There were 806 entries received, surpassing last year’s previous high of 795. It’s the first time that a record number of entries were received in back-to-back years.

The Trust was primed to shut down in December 2010 before Daly emerged as a rescue donor.

"This year's entries were nothing short of miraculous, especially given the shaky status of The Trust in December and our ultimate resurgence," said Ravi Shankar, the poet, professor and chairman-elect of the board that governs the non-profit foundation. "This is the strongest batch of entries in many years. There were so many deserving works of exceptional quality that the judges were forced into deep and protracted debates."

Shankar and outgoing Chairman Andy Thibault urged those who value the development and affirmation of young writers to support the work of The Trust.

The Connecticut Young Writers Trust is a federally approved 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible. In addition to sending donations to the Young Writers main office, donors also may contribute through PayPal by going to the following link:

Top Mystery Writer In CT June 11

Bruce DeSilva is the author of “Rogue Island,” winner of the Mystery Writers of America’s prestigious Edgar Award for best first novel of 2010.

DeSilva will appear June 11 at Central Connecticut State University as part of the Connecticut Young Writers Trust 2011 annual celebration.

"Rogue Island" has also been nominated for the Anthony and Barry awards and was a Publishers Weekly “first fiction” selection as one of the top debut novels of 2010.

“Cliff Walk,” the second book in the series, will be published early in 2012, and DeSilva is currently writing the third.

DeSilva worked as an investigative reporter, editor, and writing coach at The Providence Journal, The Hartford Courant, and, most recently, The Associated Press, before forsaking journalism to write fiction. His book reviews have appeared in hundreds of newspapers including The New York Times book review section.

    Young Area Writers Excel

... And to much judicious delight, the entries for 2011 were of an outstanding caliber, perhaps better than initially expected.
“Actually, they were exceptional,” said poetry judge Ravi Shankar ...

“It was much better than in previous years, and we had a record number of entries,” said prose judge and professional writer Rand Cooper. “In previous years we’d have a few really terrific ones, then as you go further down it would get a little dodgy. But of the 60 or so finalists I read, the bulk of it was quality writing.”

PODCAST: Crime Time with Vito Colucci, P.I.

  • Via BusinessTalkRadio.com

  • Crime Time with Vito Colucci, P.I.

The show features anything crime related. Current high profile cases or trials are discussed in detail with commentary from law enforcement experts and lawyers.

Guests like Henry Hill, the former mobster and Lucchese crime family associate, and subsequent FBI informant whose life was immortalized in the Goodfellas movie also will be featured.

What it's like to be a P.I., the latest technology and crime detection resources as well as forensics methods are also discussed on Crime Time. In addition, listener calls will be answered(i.e. How do I know if my spouse is cheating?).

Each program includes a segment entitled "WHAT WERE THEY THINKIN'?!" This centers on bizarre crime related news, possible new laws across the country, i.e. police in NY state told to shoot to wound in a confrontation with a criminal instead of shooting to kill; convicted criminals in 8 states having access to citizens social security numbers as part of their inmate work programs, etc.

Vito comments on these subjects and listeners can also call in to give their opinion or perhaps their own examples.

  • WHO IS THAT BAD MAN?

    Communiqué
    from our Caribbean posse:

Mi bredrin, dem man dem a bad man!! Ya dun know!

... Mind how you talk to me. You no fi talk to bad man so
    ...

Ricardo Reyes is the leader and founder of the Latin alternative band, Cosmic Jibaros.

The Cosmic Jibaros released their first album, Yo Soy Del Mundo, in 2007.

The lead singer, songwriter and guitarist was born in Bridgeport and spent his early years in Puerto Rico before returning to the Park City and earning a Bachelors degree in Business from Sacred Heart University.

Reyes is a founding member of a more traditional Latin project called The Pasofino Social Club. The Pasofino Social Club hosts Caribbean, Boleros and South American Classic Music.

Rick is working on a new album of all original material to be released in the fall of 2011.

The Cosmic Jibaros were featured as the reception band at The Hartford Club in June 2010 for the Connecticut Young Writers Trust’s 13th annual celebration.

Reyes also led a parade in March from the Haircuts Etc. barber shop in Litchfield to the Litchfield Car Wash and then on to La Cupola Ristorante for the Young Writers Dionysiac Deadline Demo, part of an awareness campaign to generate entries for this year’s competition.

Reyes and percussionist Jesse ‘Timbalon’ Perez join the Jen Allen Big Band / Cosmic Jibaros As One Featuring DominiQue June 11 at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain for the Young Writers 14th annual celebration.

    About Cosmic Jibaros

    The Cosmic Jibaros
    Have Effectively Destroyed
The Concept Of A Typical Latin Rock Band

They build From Latin and Caribbean rhythms and have somehow added incredible guitars and accordion flourishes for a sound that’s both cross-cultural and highly danceable.

There’s an irresistible pull of traditional Bomba beats that interplays between the congas and timbales mixed with urban elements in the deep drum and bass and effects-laden guitar work.

These songs are laced with social and political overtones, and are sung primarily in Spanish by charismatic front man Ricardo Reyes.

Somehow, The seven-piece group is equally at home in a rock venue or on a festival stage as in a Spanish Harlem Club.

The Cosmic Jibaros are a collection of Skilled musicians who draw on backgrounds as diverse as gospel (Drummer Chris Stanley), Latin, Roots (Conguero Obanilu Ire Allende); rock (bassist Juan Carlos Vega); Funk, Latin, Jazz (percussionist Tony Cintron); Soul, Rock, and Blues (guitarist Darian Cunning) and pop-rock (keyboard player/accordionist Tony Senes). Lead Singer Ricardo Reyes’ sincerity and stage presence pours his emotions into his songs and makes the heart beat faster.

    Cosmic Jibaros Accolades

*Have won the Fairfield County Weekly’s Band Grand Slam, Best Latin Band, for the past four years.

    * Have performed for The Gathering of The Vibes festival. SONO Arts Festival, The Areyto Festival (New England’s Largest Hispanic Festival, The Apple Festival (Union Square New York). The Live at Five Series 2008.

    * Many New York City venues including The Cutting Room in Manhattan, Camaradas el Barrio in Spanish Harlem, The Nuyorican poets Café in the lower east side, Zebulon in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, featured Connecticut Band in the Yahoo/Telemundo Musica Fresca nationwide competition and many venues and colleges in the Tri-state and New England regions.

    What The Critics Are Saying

"Still grounded in rock, but with a hypnotic rhythm, partially sung in English and part sung in Spanish, The Cosmic Jibaros appeal to a wide audience who wants to feel, and not just hear, their music ..."
-- Brita Brundage, Fairfield County Weekly

“I felt like I was somewhere between the old fania days and the future of Ozomatly”

Litchfield-Morris Rotary Donates Thousands To Local, International Groups

    Public Invited
    To Awards Presentation
    Thursday, May 5,
    Forman School

The Litchfield-Morris Rotary Club will honor local service groups and hand out cash grants Thursday, May 5, during a luncheon at the Forman School.

The public is invited, but reservations are requested. Call Rotary Club President Peter Aziz at (860) 567-9431. The luncheon begins at noon and there is no charge.

“Our local efforts are again focused on programs that benefit young people, although this year, in response to needs arising from the economy’s impact on individuals and families, we also chose to support initiatives in the areas of health and human services,” Aziz said.

“Our international efforts target the eradication of Polio and a wonderful school for blind children in Ethiopia.”

The club’s donations total more than $7,000 to nine local organizations and two international groups. Recipients include the Forman School general scholarship fund, the towns of Litchfield and Morris social services funds, the Litchfield Performing Art’s jazz camp, the All Wars Memorial (Bantam) capital campaign, the Torrington soup kitchen, the Connecticut Young Writers Trust, the David Paletsky Fund (which provides financial assistance to Morris families), the Litchfield Community Services Fund, Rotary International’s Polio Plus campaign, and the Mekele Blind School in Ethiopia. This is in addition to $6,000 that the Rotary Club awards annually to graduating students at Litchfield and Wamogo high schools.
